The Game That Wasn't...

The sad news is that we, as co-chairs & an advisory board, had to make the heartbreaking call to postpone the game on Saturday not so much due to the rain, but because of the lightning. The good news is that we have hit 180K - which is amazing!

Not that a little weather issue would keep us all away from the afterparty. We went through 10 kegs in 2 hours flat! Special thanks to Blanco's for hydrating everyone and to Prince's for feeding us!

It was a fun morning. And handful of players and coaches waited - a'la waiting in your car for school to start back in the day - for Sam Malone and Reggie the cameraman to set it up and prepare for our LIVE feed into Debra Duncan & Great Day Houston. Callie & Jill were rockstars and the players & coaches weren't too bad, either.

T-minus 22 hours to kick off. Are you excited?

This morning co-chairs, Jill & Callie (and Dana) were on the Roula & Ryan show on 104.1 KRBE - Roula has aided in announcing the game with the very talented James Sivco each year, but due to scheduling conflicts she cannot this year (we have no doubt the wonderfully talented Mills McCoin will step in nicely). Thanks Roula, Ryan, Eric, Phoenix & Special K for having us. It was fantastic this morning!

Last week we began the draft process with a happy hour at the Armadillo Palace - over 110 blondes, brunettes, coaches, and some unbiased referees came out to sign up, start their (friendly) smack talk and get ready for BvB 5

Time to Pass the Ball...

After years at the helm -- since the inception (2006) for Kate & Mere and since 2007 for Elizabeth & Dana -- the time has come to pass the football. We are so excited to announce that Jill Ford and Callie Parker will be chairmen of BvB Houston for 2010. These girls gave us so much more than the just their time last year and we know they will do an incredible job!

Join us as we pass them a football and a drink or two this Thursday -- July 23rd. The new Dean's has just opened on Fairview, near Taft. There will be light bites from Ruggles Green, Dean's delicious signature frozen cosmos and drink specials.

Over 150 guests shopped and mingled at Tootsies on April 22nd to raise money for BVB 2009. Mayor Bill White, who is a red head and thus impartial, also stopped by to say a few encouraging words to the teams of shoppers.

Roula Rocks

The fabulous Roula Christie is joining BVB for the 3rd year in a row as Co-Announcer to James Sivco. Roula is the better half (sorry Ryan!) of Houston's 104.1 KRBE's morning show duo, The Roula & Ryan Show.

Roula admits that she doesn't know much about football at all - but don't worry Roula -- that's no different than half the girls playing on the field!

Maria Shriver Talks Alz to the NYTimes

Maria Shriver in today's NY Times Magazine talks about her father’s Alzheimer’s disease, her husband’s future plans and what it was like the first two times she lost her job.

You are the co-producer of a four-part series for HBO, “The Alzheimer’s Project,” and I wonder if you’ve noticed that Alzheimer’s has become a popular and probably overused punch line now that baby boomers are turning gray and becoming more forgetful.  I like to make jokes; I consider myself a funny person. I just think making jokes about people who are in a situation beyond their control is not funny to them or their families.

But is it permissible to joke at your own expense? As in: “I can’t find my keys. I must have incipient Alzheimer’s.”  If someone says to me, “I’m worried because I can’t find my keys,” I say, “You should only be worried if you put your keys in the refrigerator.”

Your father, Sargent Shriver, the founding director of the Peace Corps, is suffering from Alzheimer’s, right? How old is he now?  He is 93. This was someone with a beautiful, sharp, in-tune mind. Now he doesn’t know my name, but I always introduce myself to him, and he flashes a smile.

Are you a member of the Alzheimer’s Study Group, whose chairmen are Newt Gingrich and Bob Kerrey, who are trying to devise a national plan for conquering the disease?  You sound like my mother. You think I’m not doing enough. I’ve got four kids, three of whom are teenagers and one of whom is 11, and I have a full plate as first lady of California. I also have two sick parents. I have a miniature horse and three dogs and a pig. That’s why I can’t be on the Alzheimer’s Study Group.

You seem like a natural spokeswoman for a disease. You’re visible, and you look like Wonder Woman with those cheekbones.  I’m not a superhero. Trust me, I’m not. I’m definitely not that. I am barely getting by.

Are you still living in Los Angeles?  Yes, I am a California girl.

And your husband, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger, commutes from L.A. to the Capitol building in Sacramento?  Yes. He goes back and forth on a plane.

So he's gone from Monday to Friday?  It depends. Every week is different, but he'll be watching the HBO special.

How do you know?  I hope he will. It would be good if he did.

Has he seen it yet?  No, he hasn’t seen it. They’re watching other things in my house. They’re watching the Lakers.

Do you think he will stay in politics after his term expires next year?  I have no idea what he’s going to do. That’s the truth. He’s termed out.

Perhaps he wants to run for the U.S. Senate?  He has said he doesn’t, so I guess I’d take him at his word.

Did you vote for him for governor when he ran in 2003?  Yes, I did. It was the first time I voted Republican.

Soon after, you left your job at NBC because it was considered a conflict of interest for a reporter to be the wife of a governor.  It was hard. A lot of things go when you lose your job, and it doesn’t matter who you are. It’s a loss of identity, it’s a loss of structure, it’s a loss of your passion depending on the role the job played in your life. This was the second time I lost my job. I was fired from “Morning News,” which was devastating to me.

That was at CBS? Why were you fired?  They fired the whole show.

Did you ever see that unsettling film “Away From Her,” in which Julie Christie plays an Alzheimer’s patient?  I watched half of it. I sobbed, and then I turned it off. I couldn’t handle it.

In that case, why should anyone watch your HBO show?  This is not going to make you laugh. But it will move you. When this is over, you can always go out and rent “Wedding Crashers.”

Sivco, You're Doing a Great Job!

Nearly all professional sports teams, most collegiate teams--as well as a dwindling number of high schools--have their own play-by-play announcers, who are usually recognized as the voice of the team on radio broadcasts and are often identified as part of the team like the players or the coaches.

For BVB, that man is Mr. James Sivco.

Once BVB season comes around, you'll see him at team meetings and practices, quietly surveying the players and coaches, and taking notes for his Game Day commentary. He does an excellent job, considerably heightening the game experience with his play-by-play coverage. Thanks Sivco, for all your hard work. We think you're doing a great job.

Maria Shriver Testifies Before The Senate Committee on Aging

California First Lady, Maria Shriver, gave a moving testimony on March 25, 2009 on Capitol Hill. For those of you unaware, Shriver's father Sargent Shriver -- founder of Peace Corps, Head Start, and Americorps -- has Alzheimer's Disease. Her testimony:

Alzheimer's Disease On Film

There are quite a lot of films out there that deal with Alzheimer's Disease. I've seen so many of them, but nothing quite hits the nail on the head better than Away From Her.

Other films we love that highlight Alzheimer's Disease include: The Notebook, Savages, Iris, and Diminished Capacity.

Fact: 250,000 Alzheimer's caregivers in the U.S. are between the ages of 8 and 18

Right now, there are 10 million caregivers providing care for those with Alzheimer's Disease, many of them family members, at enormous personal cost. According to the Alzheimer's Association, these caregivers tend to be spouses, but there's evidence that 250,000 of these caregivers are children 8 to 18. So you get the sense of an expanded circle of people who are affected by this disease. It's not just the person with the disease. It's not just their immediate caregiver -- it's the children and grandchildren.This video is a short story of a 13-year old girl dealing with her mother's dementia. It won Best Short Film in the YouTube 2007 Video Awards.
